Fear

Have a short discussion about fear - what scares you? What sorts of things most often frighten people? (Films, death, spiders, heights) Why are these things scary? Why do they freak people out? (Fear of losing control, of the unknown, of death or pain?)

'Come bow before him now in reverence and fear' is a line from the song 'Be still' by David J Evans. But surely this fear is different to being scared of heights. The Bible teaches us to 'fear' God, meaning that we should acknowledge his power and might and look on this with respect and awe.

There is one phrase that pops up in all of the following verses: Genesis 26:24, Exodus 20:20, Isaiah 41:10, Mathew 1:20, Matthew 14:27, Luke 1:30, Luke 5:10.

  • Why do you think God (in various forms) had to say this phrase when meeting these people?
  • When you meet God, how do you think you will react? Why?
  • Think how you can give time to revere God and be in awe of him.
