A powerful, personal God

These first two ideas are meant to introduce your young people to worshipping God purely for being God.

Adoration#1: How often do we sit and just consider the greatness of God? Do we ever sit in awe and bathe in His greatness, holiness and goodness? Ask your young people to close their eyes and imagine the sun is just rising above the horizon on a clear day. (We have all seen the sun like this, shining really blindingly across the landscape, casting long shadows). Even better sit outside on a day like this! Imagine God is that light, bathing you in warmth, filling the sky with light so beautiful and blindingly bright that you cannot look directly at it. This is something of what Revelation says God will be like when we meet him - but do we ever think of him like this?

Adoration#2: Ask your young people to each take one of the following verses from the Bible and to sit on their own somewhere (maybe in a field or somewhere beautiful to appreciate God's creation). (Choose from: Psalm 115:16, 1 Chronicles 16:29, Psalm 27:4, Psalm 29:2, Psalm 19:1, Psalm 111:3) They should read the passage a few times and contemplate it. Ask them to think of God and all he has done - imagine space, the stars, the size of the oceans on Earth, the number of people in this country, the variety of plants etc... This is a time they can use to 'practice' worshipping God and visualising his awesomeness. What does it feel like? Is it easy to spend just spend 10 minutes concentrating on God? When could you incorporate doing this for a short while every day?

Growth: Give each of your young people a small plant - it could be a miniature tree or a flowering plant (a keen gardener in your church may give you potted cuttings for free). Print Colossions 1:10 round each pot. As they learn to nurture the plant, this should remind them of how God cares for each of us

Thanks: Hand out pens and paper to each person; starting with their pen in the middle of the sheet, everyone draws a spiral outwards getting larger and larger until it hits the edge of the page. Ask them to write everything they are thankful for along the spiral working outwards from the centre, starting with the thing they are most thankful for. This should be a positive list, and can include everything from their pet goldfish to the air we breathe. On completion, point out how much God provides for us, referencing Matthew 6: 25-27.
